Why do cordless drills vary so much in price?

I was looking at an 18V Cordless Drill for my husband, but I don't know what kind to buy. Some are only $30.00 and others are $200.00. What is the difference? It looks like most of them come with 2 batteries and a carring case. I'm really confused. Any suggestions???

The difference in drill price is due to the amount of torque that they generate & also the battery & the length of time it'll work without recharging. Dewalt or Milwaukee are two of the best but unfortunately are also among the most expensive. If he's not going to be using it constantly, I'd buy him something in the middle price range. The cheapest ones are junk, don't waste your money.

Should I get an 18 volt cordless drill? ?

I'm looking to buy a lithium battery powered cordless drill. I am impress with the Hitachi brand (price/value). I am using this around the house, but I want enough drill to never be limited. Still I have been told that an 18volt drill is over kill, but weight and size was I don't see much difference between the 14.4 and the 18 volt. My thought would be to get the 18 volt (regardless of excess voltage need) since the nice lithium 18volt batteries will be interchangeable with other Hitachi tools which all seem to be 18v. Is this the correct line of thinking correct? Or is it just too much drill for my needs? And what does that even mean? Any Help?

I would get the 18 Volt, but look for one that has variable speed settings/clutch for when you don't *need* all 18 volts.

How much electric is used in like terms?

If my cordless drill is 18v. How much electric from a 110v ac system does it take after its converted to dc in the battery to charge that battery. Going from the wall to the charger to the battery? Simplified: does it take 18v of converted power to charge an 18v battery? 20v? 36v? In essence, does it take 50cents of electric to get a 10cents charge?

The cost of electricity is typically about 10 cents per KWh (Kilowatt-Hour or 1,000 watt-hours). That is like a room electric heater operated for one hour. The charger likely would operate at much less watts for a shorter time and consume less and less watts as the battery reaches full charge. Because nothing is perfect and efficiency is less than 100%, more AV power would be used than DC power required by the DC battery. Also, the charger likely remains warm until unplugged continuing to consume energy (wasting heat energy) even after the battery is fully charged. The benefit of course is in convenience, especially at the top of a ladder without an extension cord.
