NiCd is old technology. NiMh is new technology, a replacement for the old, problematic NiCd technology. Yes, NiMh will work just fine, your charger will handle it just fine, and no, I don't have any websites for you.

You might do an online search for Chicago Battery, a company I used to use. They had replacements for any battery ever made.

Lawn Tractor with B&S 18.5hp keeps killing the Battery?

I have a lawn tractor with above mentioned engine, it killed the last battery, meaning it was running then it just died and wouldn't again. I put a new battery on it and ran for a couple hours then all of a sudden, it just quit again and wont start. Battery is down to about 10.6 volts, same place it was when it died last time. Turns over, just wont hit. Is this the alternator needing to be replaced, and if so, should I be able to do that. I'm no mechanic, but have work on things in the past, just not an engine like this. I looked up the part and it is only $27, which is a lot cheaper than renting a trailer to haul to a shop and paying them to fix it. Thanks

Staff Member Said:

It could be the alternator or the diode. The engine doesn't need the battery to stay running, but, on those briggs engines there is a solenoid on the bottom of the carburetor that needs 12 volts to stay open and allow fuel flow to the carburetor. That may be why it dies.
If you don't have an electric clutch here is what you can check. From the alternator there is a red wire, you should get 3 amps DC with the engine running. That is between the diode and the ignition switch. On the alternator side of the diode you should get 28 volts AC with the engine running. You also have a lighting circuit but that should have no effect on your problem. Nothing but the starter and the solenoid on the carburetor should take powe from the battery, but if the charging system isn't working it will slowing drain the battery.

how to convert amps into ah?

ok, i got a 4 watt fm transmitter, it draws between 12-18 volts @ 0.5 amps, i need it portable to go to major events in my city for brodcast purposes, so in other words, i need a battery, something deep cycle, but not too heavy like a car battery

im thinking about a power wheels battery,

there cheap, and i can carry 2 or 3 charged with me in a backpack as backups, but will they work,

specs are 12 volt, (not shure if powerwheels are dc or ac, but i need dc)

so 12volts at 9.5 amps hour (ah), and i need between 12-18 voltsdc at 0.5 amps, will this battery work????????????
ok, so let me get something strait, amp hours (ah) is not a measure of amps, as in, if my transmiter takes 0.5 amps, the battery puts off 9.5 amps, it frys my transmitter, ah = the amount of amps the battery can put off in a hour????

so in other words, with the 0.5 amps the transmitter takes, with a 9.5 amp hour battery, thats 2 hour per amp hour (0.5 amp draw) so thats 18.5 hours per battery?????????

but what is the amp outpou on the battery, does it change for whatevers it is attached to, like, contiunesly, how many amps does it put out....

will this battery work without frying my transmitter, im so confused:)

Staff Member Said:

By nature all batteries are DC the only way to get them to AC would pass them through a circuit that oscillates.
Yes the battery will would work assuming the wiring leading up to it can handle the current, which they most likely can since they are designed to run dc motors. With optimum conditions you can get 19 hours from them (when they are new probably) at .5 amps

car batteries on the other hand have several hundred amp hours at least so it is all about the maximum time you will be needing to use it continually

Additional info: the battery ideally can supply an infinite current but realistically it is limited to what the internal resistance of the battery can support until it overheats and blows up.

Ah is amps per hour, electronics only draw the current that they require to operate that's why battery ratings are in Ah instead of Amps. It is the voltage or potential difference that pushes the electrons through the circuit so too much voltage can fry electronics. But current or amps are self regulating by the circuit.

Here's a pipe analogy to help understand electricity, think of voltage as pressure in a pipe and current as the flow through a pipe. Too much pressure and your pipe can burst but the area of the pipe is always the same(without getting into fluid mechanics, just as an example).

Hope that helps

Popular Mechanics (1st link) rated the Ryobi 18V the best value among 10 drills tested (But they did say for homeowner use).
Personally, I love my Rona house brand 18V hammer drill that cost me only $80 Can ... It works great AND has a 3 year replacement warranty. The latter is a key feature for me. I don't really care if it fails if I can get a replacement for less than $30/yr.

What is the best 18V lithium-ion cordless drill out now?

I originally purchased a Dewalt drill with Nicad batteries. However, after fooling around with the lighter lithium based cordless drill/drivers I've decided to go that route.

I'll be using this drill from everything from hanging blinds to decking. I'm not a contractor but more of a DIY weekend warrior. The one thing that I was concerned about was being able to drill into concrete. Seems like the drill/drivers that have the hammerdrill feature are on the heavy side and I was looking for something lighter. Am I better off just getting a seperate corded hammerdrill or Hilti drill for the very few times that I may need to drill into concrete?

So far I've had my eye on Makita's,Hitatchi,Ridgid to name a few. Can anyone offer some opinions?
Is anyone familiar with Ridgid? They came out with a new 18V lithium with a larger battery than the new compact Makita(black & white). Ridgid offers a lifetime warranty(even on the batteries). I'd like to hear from anyone who has used their tools. The 18V is around 4.5lbs.

Dewalt drills are a very good tool. Things some people dont know is that there are 2 levels of Dewalt tools- compact and XRP. XRP are the ones a contractor will use and are a good tool for the regular DIY's to purchase. Personally I own a Dewalt drill 14.4 and it has served me well, but if I was to go and get a new drill then I would be buying a Ridgid tool. Ridgid tools have move power(torque) in the same class for less but sometimes they have more power that in other classes ie a Ridgid 12v 3/8" chuck has a torque rating of 300 in/lbs of torque while the dewalt compact 18V has 300 in/lbs of torque. Now if your me I would much rather handle a 12v than a clunky 18v. Plus the Ridgid will and have a lifetime warenty batteries inc. While the Dewalt will have a 1yr parts and labour and 2yrs on the batteries. Another expamle is the Dewalt inpact driver 18v has 1170 in/lbs of torque where the Ridgid 14.4 has 1400 in/lbs and their 18V has 1450 in/lbs all their tools will sell for less $$. Dont get me wrong Dewalt makes a good tool but there are better tools out there. I just like the thought of never having the buy another drill unless I need an extra one by going with Ridgid. Plus the wife will love the idea too, one less tool to buy again= more $$ that she can spend..ha ha j/k any lady DIY's

Of course, the both tools in the 2-piece set have lower torque and max RPM than the 18V drill-driver, but I will have an impact driver in the exchange. Also the tools in the 2-piece set are smaller, which is more to my purpose (basic household maintenance).

Should I sell the 18V (bought at $200 + tax), at a loss because it's used, and get the 2-piece set? I'm thinking $160 for the 18V and I'll throw in the drill bits. The 2-piece set is $160 shipped, from Amazon. (I'll need new bits, as the drill takes hex-shank bits.) Or should I keep the 18V, because you never know when you'll need the power?

What do you think?
The tools in the 2-piece set are less bulky than the 18V drill-driver.

I foresee only light household drilling and screwdriving in the years to come.

The one and only accident I've had was going back about ten years when I was insured with then 20th Century. I had about $3,000 worth of damage to my car. They refered me to one of their body shops and they did an excellent job. The claim was paid promptly. The only negative is that they took about twice as long to fix my car as stated. I have no idea what 21st century is like now. I ahve since switched to Mercury and am extremely happy with them.

How do you like the opening to my story? READ AS MUCH AS YOU WANT!?

Im twelve by the way, If you could please give me some feedback on my writing or edit it that would be great. Thanks! REAL critism is encouraged haha dont be afraid!

“Kill me, just kill me now!” I shrieked, rummaging through my shirt drawer, “Where is my shirt?!” Well actually, it’s not really my shirt. It used to belong to my mother… I plopped down from my kneeling position and pouted at the sight of my scattered clothing that was lying in heaps around my room. I heard a creak coming from the other direction. My body twisted towards the noise to find four russet-colored paws shuffling through the doorway. “Ugh! Go away Zeus!” I moaned, as I picked a piece of clothing off the floor and chucked it at the cowering Cocker Spaniel.
“Quiet down Alaira! What’s going on in there,” my dad questioned.
“Nothing, Zeus is bothering me. Can you get him out of my room, he never leaves me alone.”
He whined as the pink strap of my mothers old shirt lassoed around his neck. I glared at him and screeched, “My shirt!” I scurried off of my knees and raced towards my long lost garment.

I untangled my shirt from Zeus’s shaggy fur and he nipped me. “Bugger off,” I said as I put on my washed-out jeans and the ivory shirt, which enhanced the tan color of my summer tinged skin. The stairs caved slightly under my feet as I sprinted to the door, for my house is very old. The brisk, fresh air splashed onto my face and weaved through my yellow locks as I stepped through the doorway. The morning dew tickled my feet as my toes curled over the doorframe and onto the grass. The south-bound wind didn’t slow me down as I ran north towards the stream by my house.

I gazed out towards the cabin as the vast grassland surrounded the boulder where I sat. I shifted to face the stream on which the boulder rested. My petite feet had green bits of grass on them. As I looked up at the azure sky, I immersed my slim body into the stream, turning my hair from a strawberry blond shade to auburn. The refreshing water crawled up my back, tickling the tips of my shoulders.

I swam a few laps around the lake, relaxing in the fresh, tranquil water.
After some time, I got up and lay on the grass, the water evaporating off my goose bumped skin by the sun rays. All my muscles loosened up and I felt at a complete state of serenity and harmony, but not like it used to be.

When I was a little girl, my mother used to tell me to look up at the clouds and pretend I was the sun, and I had the responsibility for brightening the sky. I would imagine my puffy yellow dress hoping up and down as I played hop-scotch on the clouds. If I missed a cloud, people would be freezing cold with no sun! My golden curls would bounce as my blissful face lightened the sky up, step by step. My mom said that I was just like the sun in real life, every day I would warm her up with my cheerful smile and dimples that drilled holes into my scarlet cheeks.
Up until she died that is. I was six years old and my mother died a week before my birthday. I’ll always remember that day… how I sat there screaming on my bed, the tears pouring down off my sheer eyelashes like drops of water down a salt-scarred cliff. I remember finding my birthday card. It said: You are my sunshine, my only sunshine. I will always be with you even if I’m not…You will always warm up my heart no matter where I am. I love you. Goodbye
For now…
I remember thinking that she knew she was going to die, and I got mad at her for not stopping it. Yet in my heart I knew that for some reason she couldn’t stop it. I also somehow thought that it wasn’t a car crash… that’s why daddy said she died but I knew it wasn’t true. The secretive look on his face told me that there was something he’s no telling me. Every night I would sleep in mommy’s bed, alongside with daddy, dreaming of her coming back…but she never did.

My caramel-colored skin was cold from the wind. I splashed some water on my face. The water sent a chill crawling down my spine.
“Alaira! Get back inside right now, it’s starting to rain!”
“OK dad I’ll be inside in a couple of minutes.”

A tiny drop of secrecy fell from the sky; it plunged its way down but paused in mid-air. I swear I saw the ocean, the cobalt waves crashing against the shore, But it spun itself around and collapsed onto the dirt. Before I knew it, the impatient sky poured down, bringing tons of water towards the ground.

You need to decide first of all what current draw cut off voltages you want.Suppose you decide on a current draw of 0.5 amps and cut off of 13.5 volts for the Craftsman. Rig a circuit to draw 0.5 amps and connect a voltmeter. Then connect the battery and start your stop watch. When the voltage drops to 13.5 stop your watch.
How much did you pay for them new? Decrease about 2% per month if you have not used them at all, but if you have at least once a month decrease the price 9%per month. If you got them at 5 finger discount give them back is the only right thing to do, some poor worker is out tools in that case.

I've worked in construction for almost 30 years and used every brand out there. I own a Ryobi and a Dewalt at the moment -- I recommend the Dewalt, hands down. Perfect balance of speed, torque and control and the batteries recharge quickly and hold their charge well. Also quiet and very ergonomic, too -- that drill is like an extension of my body when I use it -- the ideal tool whether you are driving deck screws or drilling through a 2 x 4 with a hole saw! The Ryobi is compact and handy for tight spaces but the torque is poor and the clutch tends to slip. Absolutely do NOT waste your money on Craftsman or Black and Decker products of any type, including their so-called "Professional" series. Junk.

If my house was on fire and I only had time to grab 3 things on my way out the door, my Dewalt 18v drill/driver would be the first thing I would grab (and I'm a girl!)

Come to think of it, if my Dewalt was a guy, I'd marry him! So maybe you'd risk having your gf prefer the drill to you

PS The Dewalt was actually a Valentine's gift from my boyfriend (a professional contractor) 9 years ago. Dumped him, but still love the drill!

Take the cord housing off by removing the screws that hold it on. . Unwrap the old cord being careful not to let the spring come loose. Wind the new cord around in the opposite direction as you toke the old cord off. Reattach with the screws.g
